  • Educational and Entertaining

I’ve been using Blackstone for oil analyses for over 10 years, but only started listening to the podcast last year. I learn something new every episode! Often times, questions I didn’t even know I had are answered in the various discussions. Good stuff!

  • Great for nerds and newbs alike

I’m an automotive nerd who always likes learning about new aspects of the hobby. Joe explains things in an easy to understand way and somehow, things don’t really become repetitive episode after episode. If you’re curious about used oil analysis or just looking to explore a new alley of the automotive hobby, it’s worth checking out.

  • Blackstone Joe makes learning awesome!

I’ve binged through the first 50 episodes while driving 125-350 miles a day for work and I am hooked. I actually had known about Blackstone Labs for years thanks to forums and YouTube but I had never really thought about sending my own oil to be analyzed. I always thought “ah, that’s for souped up stuff that gets ran hard and I don’t need that for my daily driver” until I bought my own 263,xxx mile diesel truck a few months back, and it had the oil I bought the truck with. I was wondering how th... more

  • Engaging and informative

This show has just the balance of fun to information just right. I have learned a lot about just how useful oil analysis can be, how to best sample my oil, but also had some good laughs as Blackstone Joe cracks a few wise ones.

My only comment is that in the most recent episode “no oil no problem” I think they had the volume and length of the fun sound effects just a tad too high.

This show is a big part of the reason I will be sampling with Blackstone Labs from now on!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

149: Q&A with the Analyst
Q: Is it okay to sample oil if I added makeup oil?
Yes, you can sample after adding makeup oil; just let us know how much you've added because it will affect the metal concentration in the results.
149: Q&A with the Analyst
Q: Can I get an accurate reading from an oil sample taken at the end of the oil change?
Yes, oil maintains its properties and can provide meaningful data even when sampled towards the end of the oil change.
134: What to Expect When You're Extending
Q: What should be expected when changing oil from 5,000 to 10,000 miles?
You might see the iron content double with other metals remaining relatively stable; monitoring changes in oil properties through testing is essential.
134: What to Expect When You're Extending
Q: Should oil change intervals be measured in hours for hybrid engines?
Yes, measuring in hours can be more accurate for hybrid engines since they may not always run long enough to accumulate mileage on the odometer.
106: Q&A With The Analyst IV
Q: I've had a sample sitting for a year, can I send it in?
If the sample has been kept in a sealed container, it can still be valid for testing regardless of how long it has been stored.
