Terrific, very thoughtful podcast bringing out often unremarked (or under remarked) people and events which really flesh out our understanding of post war politics. I have followed politics since the 70’s and Anne Kerr and some other subjects were totally new to me but clearly core to what was really going on in those years. The items of interest and books parts are perfectly complimentary are ideal additions. One of my few “auto download” podcasts amidst dozens I listen to!
Another excellent episode - Anne Kerr sounds like a magnificent woman (albeit one with whom I would significantly disagree), difficult to imagine a character like that doing well in the present Labour Party (or an equivalent in the present Conservative Party)..
The matters of interest did raise a query in my mind (though somewhat outside of the post-war scope of the podcast), how royal assent worked under William and Mary. Following the squalid coup of 1688 (commonly called the Glorious Revolut... more
The historical content covered by the pod is fascinating but the hosts push their personal views far too often. For instance, the most recent episode talked about patriotism with a narrow view to qualifies as ‘patriotic’. Also, I wish Richard would challenge Lee’s views as much as the reverse.
If you’re interested in the history of post war politics you’ll struggle to find a podcast better than this. Consistently thought provoking, this podcast is always informed and balanced. I have particularly enjoyed the episodes on lesser remembered influential politicians such as Peter Walker and Judith Hart (whose son I worked with in the 80s). The varied content and sections on books and snippets of note gives each episode a nice breadth.
Love this podcast that throws light on overlooked corners of postwar British political history. Always interesting and engaging and a joy to listen to.
