  • Kudos and Suggestion

Really miss the good ol days when Smoaky regularly interviewed high school coaches and players throughout the Central Texas area and coverage of high school football in general. Your coverage of Baylor football is exemplary and peerless, but listening to the high school coaches and how they develop young men on and off the field was inspiring to me as a fan. Coverage of college football teams outside the Big 12, not so much. Wish you would reconsider for the 2023 football season.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

SMOAK SHOW LIVE! - June 2nd, 2026 | 365 Sports
Q: What is the most important ongoing issue in college football right now?
The guests and hosts largely agree it is the playoff structure and federal oversight in college sports, including the Cantwell-Cruz bill and potential expansions, with emphasis on how media rights and transfer rules shape the landscape.
SMOAK SHOW LIVE! - June 3rd, 2026 | 365 Sports
Q: What is your take on the idea of a Super League and who would benefit or be harmed by it?
A Super League is unlikely to be universally beneficial; it could concentrate wealth and power among a few, leaving smaller programs and Olympic sports at risk, and would require careful consideration of distribution and governance to avoid marginalizing mid-major programs.
SMOAK SHOW LIVE! - June 3rd, 2026 | 365 Sports
Q: As a broadcaster, how do you handle hearing about hearings and potential legislation today?
The goal is to translate complex congressional material for fans, providing context and separating fact from fiction while noting that significant movement is unlikely in the immediate term, with time needed for committees and potential reconciliation processes.
SMOAK SHOW LIVE! - May 28th, 2026 | 365 Sports
Q: What did Michael McCann identify as the hardest battles in the proposed NCAA reforms and why might they fail to gain momentum?
McCann pointed to the difficulty of achieving 60 votes in the Senate, calendar constraints with summer recess, and the risk that even bipartisan proposals could stall before reaching a final vote, suggesting that momentum for broad sports legislation is unlikely this year.
SMOAK SHOW LIVE! - May 28th, 2026 | 365 Sports
Q: Matt Brown, Extra Points, what is your reaction to Cody Campbell and Greg Sankey back-and-forth on the Big 12 and SEC power dynamics?
Brown described the back-and-forth as part of a broader, ongoing tug-of-war over power in college football, noting that while Sankey wields significant influence, there are many stakeholders with opposing interests; he emphasized that real change hinges on broader legislative and governance shifts rather than any single statement.
