Sorry it took me so long to review. Shadows in the West is awesome! They've done some really cool things with l5r, the editing is good, and it's like listening to an audio drama. The characters are well done (Shio is prorbably my favorite), and none of the represenation feels gross (like it usually does); in fact, it feels pretty good to just have queer characters and not have to go into this complicated, convoluted backstory about why, so thank you!
Set in an Alternate Rokugani timeline this gem of a podcast is the result of combining good storytelling, excellent players and unique old radio show format. Give them a chance you’ll never regret it.
There's something really special about being able to engage with the story of a TTRPG campaign rather than get bogged down with all the mechanics of it, which is something I can appreciate as someone who knows next to nothing about L5R to begin with. I'm invited to be invested in the characters and events as more than sheets and dice rolls and everything feels much more organic because of it. There is a lot of love that goes into this show and it's well worth the listen.
Far and away one of the beat produced, most engaging, unique actual play podcasts I’ve ever listened to.
You can tell this is a labor of love, and the story is fun to listen to too. It is like an old school radio drama. One of the most inclusive podcasts I’ve heard thus far.
Really slick production values, excellent characters & performances, and a really fresh and interesting take on the L5R setting!
The audiobook style retelling of players adventures is a quite unique way of presenting an actual play podcast! Coupled with stellar audio work and voice acting this podcast is a joy! Added on that they’ve made some much needed tweaks to the setting, making it much more interesting in my opinion!
Beautiful writing and narration, in-depth characters with excellent voice work, and pacing that builds drama without forcing it. It's like being transported to another world, and just listening has improved my own storytelling in the games I play in. Give it a listen - you won't be disappointed.
Marvelous, and a much improved take on the very problematic setting of Rokugan, that knows why we love it, but also why it's kind of terrible, and proceeds to fix it.
This is a wonderful podcast created by wonderful people, and everyone should give it a shot.
Fantastic story building. Perfect for a cold day inside working on what ever hobby makes you happy.
I’ve been listening since these lovely people began putting their excellent gameplay out here and I have never been disapointed by any of it. They are amazing!
This has easily jumped to the top of my Thursday roster, alongside the likes of The Adventure Zone and Critical Role. I love the audiobook-style presentation and the personality of the individual characters, both the players and the NPCs, and am so excited to see them delve further into the world of Rokugan.
I adore this podcast! The story is engrossing and the characters are so well done.
Shadows in the West is a fantastic adaptation of RPG play sessions, taking logs from play and turning it into a wonderful audio drama. Impeccable narration, wonderful characters, and a fantastic spin on a rich world all make SitW a top priority listen whenever a new episode comes out.
