We discuss the biggest questions: "what's real?", "who matters?" and "how to make a better world?" with scientists, celebrities, activists, writers and philosophers. The Sentientism worldview is "evidence, reason and compassion for all sentient beings." • Brilliant, thought provoking

A simple yet fundamental view and a real challenge to gain acceptance. But a necessary direction for the world to travel if we and our fellow species of animals are all to survive!

  • Jamie has a style which helps you to feel that he and his guests are firm friends from years ago and that they're just having a deep 'catch up'. Katie's take on how science and religion can occupy a place in life without there being a conflict necessarily is refreshing. Can't recommend this podcast enough. Well done!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Should Constitutions Protect All Sentient Beings? - John Adenitire & Raffael Fasel - Sentientism 241
Q: Why extend fundamental rights to all sentient animals, and how would that work in practice?
Because sentient beings have intrinsic value and interests that matter to them, the authors argue for extending fundamental rights to animals through an integrated, progressive expansion of who counts as a rights holder, potentially using existing human rights mechanisms adapted to include non-human beings without creating a separate, conflicting bill of rights.
Should Constitutions Protect All Sentient Beings? - John Adenitire & Raffael Fasel - Sentientism 241
Q: What is a constitution, and why are they important in our world?
A constitution is a multi-layered document that anchors a state's fundamental legal principles and structures; it shapes what is possible and how power is exercised, providing a framework for rights and governance while also setting limits to prevent arbitrary rule.
MurderBot, Non-violent Protest & Microbial Minds - Sci-fi author Joan Slonczewski - Sentientism 238
Q: What motivates your interest in nonviolence as a guiding principle in both life and fiction?
Nonviolence is a positive, strategic force; it's about achieving justice through organized, principled action, with real-world methods like those described by Gene Sharp guiding fiction and resistance movements alike.
MurderBot, Non-violent Protest & Microbial Minds - Sci-fi author Joan Slonczewski - Sentientism 238
Q: How do you reconcile scientific realism with spiritual or transcendent experiences in understanding reality?
I view spiritual truth as needing to be consistent with physical reality; miracles, if they occur, should align with the material world, and any spiritual experience must be coherent with what we can observe and test.
Censored Landscapes - Isabella La Rocca Gonzalez - Sentientism 240
Q: What makes a better world possible, in your view?
She argues for a practical, interconnected approach where consumer choices, policy, and humane practices converge to reduce harm, promote plant-based systems, and acknowledge the interdependence of humans, animals, and ecosystems.
