在古印度的摩偷羅國，有一位善男子樂好佛法，跟隨善於教化的優波笈多尊者出家為比丘。優波笈多尊者為其說法，這位比丘聞法後精進修道，得須陀洹果。比丘心裡想：我已確立戒行，不犯惡事，不會再得惡果。尊者知道其心念，便告訴比丘：「善男子！你應當更精進用功，切莫放逸。」比丘回答：「我已成就須陀洹果，證果後只要持續精進不放逸，就能夠免墮惡道，人間、天上七死七生，享盡人天之樂後，當證涅槃。」
