佛陀曾經至三十三天夏安居，為母親摩耶夫人及諸天眾開示法要。彼時，目犍連尊者及諸弟子，皆淨住舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園結夏安居。
這段期間，四眾弟子久不見佛陀，思慕渴仰如來，於是齊至目犍連尊者處，虔誠作禮後請問尊者：「尊者是否知道如來在何處安居呢？」
目犍連尊者告訴大眾：「世尊目前正在忉利天善法堂，拘毗陀羅香樹不遠處坐夏安居，為報母親生育之恩，而為母親及諸天眾說法。」

過去，祇陀太子與給孤獨長者共同發心祇洹精舍供養世尊。並各請佛及出家法師供養一個月，在應供期間，佛為二人廣明法要，二人聞法歡喜，皆有所悟。
祇陀太子歡喜返回東宮，讚歎佛之功德，作樂自娛。當時，太子的弟弟琉璃王子常陪侍在波斯匿王身旁。一日，國王微服簡從，帶著近臣及夫人往詣祇洹精舍聽佛開示。此時，瑠璃王子則留在後方，守護國王御座。

佛陀淨住於舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園時，有一大梵天王起大邪見，作是思惟：「我所住天宮恆常不變，真是殊勝呀！根本沒有任何人像我一樣投生在此，更不用說能超越我！」
世尊於禪定中觀察到大梵天王的心念，認為正是教化天眾的因緣，於是乘三昧力，於剎那間出現於大梵天的虛空中，安詳而坐。
於此同時，憍陳如尊者亦觀察到此一化緣，立刻入定，隨現大梵天際，立於佛陀東側。接著，大迦葉尊者、目連尊者、阿那律尊者，也一一出現於世尊的南面、西面和北面。
