久遠以前，有一名窮人靠打零工賺得六升麥子，正想拿回家維持家計時，在半路遇見一位正在托缽的沙門。窮人心想：這位沙門容貌莊嚴、威儀具足，令人生起恭敬之心。若能供養，不知有多麼殊勝！沙門察覺到窮人的心念，跟隨他來到河岸邊。
窮人請示：「我有麥子想要供養您，可以嗎？」沙門回答：「當然可以。」窮人立即在地上敷衣，請沙門就座。窮人取一升麥子，和成一麵團，供養時起心動念：如果這是位持戒清淨的得道聖人，請讓我現世成為一個小王國的國王！
