「世尊成道已」，釋迦牟尼佛十九歲出家、三十歲成道，是淨飯王的太子，名叫悉達多。悉達多太子看到了眾生的生、老、病、死，覺得人生是苦海，所以出家修行。出家後，前五年遊歷，後六年苦行，所以是十九出家、三十成道。
釋迦牟尼佛成道至今，已經有很長的時間了，這段時間的計算有兩種方式：一種是中國的記載，從周昭王那時起算，到現在一共有三千多年；另外一種是從印度阿育王碑考證，離現在只有二千五百多年。這兩種記載，我們都要了解。

解脫生死之意義（十八）
經云：「應無所住而生其心」，心不住在任何境界上，即所謂「明心見性」解脫，六祖就是因這句話而悟道，亦即六祖壇經所說「不思善、不思惡」；金剛經云「不住色、聲、香、味、觸、法。」若住在任何境界上，就感生死煩惱。
修行悟道以後，處處得自在，處處得解脫，這念心不住在任何時間、空間，沒有罣礙。修定的目的是轉識成智、轉迷成悟，悟到本心就是佛，佛就是心，心、佛、眾生，三無差別。契悟本心即是菩薩，迷失本心就是眾生，心有邪念就是魔鬼。
