有覺有觀的功夫，對治了粗的煩惱、粗的妄想，心得清涼、心得清淨，產生了輕安和禪定，就是初禪，稱為「離生喜樂地」，再也不會打妄想了。繼續靜坐，這個境界經常現前，感到法喜、禪悅，產生了法執。雖然不貪外面的財、色、名、食、睡，卻貪著這個快樂的禪定境界。由於心愈來愈細，馬上察覺了，不再貪著這種粗的快樂。不貪，就是離。離開了歡喜、離開了禪悅，慢慢地得到更深的禪定，由定產生了更微細、更微妙的快樂，就證到二禪──定生喜樂地。

離生喜樂 成就初禪
「住大禪定」─初禪、二禪、三禪、四禪，是指住這四禪，這是有修有證。「四禪八定」通內、通外，無論凡夫、外道、聖人，都可以修四禪八定。釋迦牟尼佛住在什麼大禪定？就是住到四禪─捨念清淨地。
初禪怎麼修？第一，離欲及不善法。要想證到初禪，第一，要離開世間的欲，遠離財、色、名、食、睡等欲念，遠離男女之欲、名利之欲，修習十善。第二，離了欲，還要離不善法及惡法。惡法，指五逆十惡。離開了惡法、離開了欲，還有不善法。什麼是不善法？不善法，不一定是惡法。例如，打坐時打瞌睡、打妄想，或者... more
定慧不二 無修無證
假使心靜不下來，讀書的時候，覺得課業太多、壓力太重，就想打坐；坐在這個地方，妄想紛飛，瞌睡也來了，坐得兩腿又痠、又痛、又麻，不想坐了，又想去做事、去發心；但是面對現實、面對人我是非，又起了煩惱，這時又想：「乾脆住茅蓬好了！」住茅蓬好不好？也不一定好！
過去有一位禪和子，在禪堂裡打坐，有了一點定境以後，聽到別人講話也起煩惱、聽到別人走路也起煩惱……，覺得自己的功夫很高，想要住茅蓬了。但是不管茅蓬的大小，總是要想辦法修建。茅蓬修好了，住在茅蓬總是要吃、要住，就要去化緣、要去種... more
從現在開始用功修行，一直到最後，禪定修成功了，當中有九個層次，稱為「九住心」─內住、續住、安住、近住、調順、寂靜、最寂靜、專注一趣、等持。首先，這念心要「內住」。
眾生的心是外住，眼睛喜歡看外面的顏色、耳朵喜歡聽外面的聲音……心安定不下來，所以稱為眾生。自己檢討修行有沒有進步？假使眼睛看到外面的境界，能夠收回來，不生貪愛，馬上能作主，我們的心就往內看了，就有進步了。耳朵聽到外面的是非，馬上就知道自己在聽聲音了、在攀緣了，就要往內聽，所謂「兩眼內視，兩耳內聽」。要想了生死，就是要內收，收攝六根。... more
