I hadn’t bothered to dig much into New Zealand history prior to listening to this, it made the whole topic a lot more fun! Thanks for getting me excited to learn more about our country!
Why was this not around when I was learning history at school? Actually explains a lot of really useful stuff in really accessible ways. Should get plenty of people handwringing about the confronting nature of colonisation and it’s enduring impacts and that’s good. Got to the end of it and wanted more. When’s the next series?
Definitely check out the web series as well! It’s different content (same topics), but is also educational (and very funny)
Informative and funny, well worth your time
The Citizen’s Handbook is a wonderfully funny and challenging way to learn about the makings of our very own history and civics. Not only did I learn much, I guffawed many, many times. Which helped me to ameliorate the shame I feel at not knowing more about NZ’s chequered past.
I have been recommending this series to everyone I can think of. It is being used at my school as part of a student inquiry about “Who we are” and I couldn’t be happier.
This excellent podcast succinctly explains the long term effects of colonisation in NZ, and shines a light upon a lot of uncomfortable truths. It inspired me to research my own whakapapa to see what part my ancestors played in the development of NZ! Really great podcast and web series 😍
I love Robbie's work. NZ is a great country with wonderful people but there is a history and current atmosphere of unfairness. I remember drug laws being a huge mechanism of oppression for youth, the poor or any group that questioned the powerful. Most people I know are wealthy because of the land their parents sold off but they are convinced it's because they are very clever - which perhaps they are. The media is completely bought out by Australian concerns and no MSM can any longer be trusted.... more
Highly informative and funny all in one. So good.
Exactly what I needed to get through lockdown and a super awesome education tool!
This is a great combination of brains and fun. Very recommended.

It's rather odd to be a citizen of New Zealand: we don't teach our history well, we don't have civics, and we expect adults to just osmotically pick up what they need to know to make sense of politics, elections, laws, and the economy.
"The Citizen's Handbook" is a romp through the most important things you're expected to know to do your duty as a citizen: what's New Zealand's history? How are laws passed? What's NZ's Constitution? This podcast informs on all those worthy topics, including Econ... more
Witty and insightful look into not only our past (& not ignoring all the bad “colonising bits”) but also how our country is governed today. The guest comedy talents are great, but it’s Robbie’s blend of storytelling and satirical bent that makes the show.
Presumably those who govern Radio NZ were so embarrassed by declining ‘Flight of the Concords’ that they just approved whatever nonsense was dumped in front of them. The only other explanations for this pathetic drivel polluting the airwaves are:
1- Nepotism, someone on this show have relatives in Radio NZ management.
2: Radio NZ National has become a retirement scheme for failed comedians, especially those without the self honesty to realise how bad and unfunny they are. Other examples are Cru... more
