Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

30: RetinaRounds™ Podcast 30: Jay Duker, MD
Q: What makes Duraview different from existing anti-VEGF therapies?
Duraview uses a biocompatible, biodegradable insert that provides sustained release of verolinib, allowing longer dosing intervals and multi-MOA activity (anti-VEGF, anti-PDGF, and IL-6 blockade) to potentially improve outcomes and reduce injection burden.
32: RetinaRounds™ Podcast 32: Choosing your first (or second) job
Q: What contract negotiables are most important for a fellow to consider?
Key items include protections against private equity sales, tail coverage, non-compete considerations, vacation/PTO, and a defined path to partnership. He emphasizes prioritizing a small number of critical items, negotiating in good faith, and having an ophthalmology-focused attorney review the contract.
32: RetinaRounds™ Podcast 32: Choosing your first (or second) job
Q: What factors did you prioritize the second time around when selecting a practice?
He prioritized payer mix, staff turnover, geographic location relative to family, growth opportunities, and a collegial culture with strong multi-specialty integration. The second practice offered a more favorable payer environment, low turnover, and a reasonable contract with a clear path to partnership.
32: RetinaRounds™ Podcast 32: Choosing your first (or second) job
Q: Can you explain what private equity means in ophthalmology and how it affected your first position?
Private equity groups buy practices, consolidate them, and aim to create economies of scale to eventually sell for a larger profit. In the guest's first job, the sale process was announced, and the contract included terms that were unfavorable to him. He chose to resign after realizing the arrangement wouldn't meet his professional needs.
13: RetinaRounds™ Podcast 13: Frank Brodie, MD, MBA
Q: What do you see as the next really big step forward for Retina?
Brodie expresses optimism about advancements in gene therapies, restorative therapies, and innovative surgical tools that will enhance patient care.
