  • A Powerful Alignment: STEM for the World and Smarter Decisions

As we’ve developed SARBIMED’s strategic vision of “STEM for the World,” it has become clear that our work is rooted in two powerful commitments: using science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to address pressing global challenges, and creating a welcoming environment where everyone feels at home, no matter where they are from. This vision resonates deeply with the INFORMS tagline, “Smarter Decisions for a Better World,” which emphasizes leveraging our collective talents and technologies... more

  • Diverse and educational podcast

The podcast is well made and covers a wide range within the field of analytics and optimization. A variety of experts is invited for interviews which lets one experience different views and topics.

I have two minor negative remarks though:

    1. sometimes the interviews seem too very scripted, like it is not an actual conversation but both Ashley and the guest are reading a text out loud. Meaning also the questions do not build up on the answer of the guest.

    2. The theme music is not balanced w... more

  • Lots of space for improvement

I’m generally ok with the speakers but in comparison to other podcasts I have subscribed to, the host or maybe the entire program design needs to be thought through.

I hope that the host can have more meaningful interaction with the speaker. Within the maybe ten podcasts I have listened to, the host has never asked one single question that is based on what the speaker has just said; has never helped to guide the speaker to clarify what they have just explained, or direct the speaker to talk ab... more

From kibble to clicks: Chewy's path to the Edelman Award competition
Q: What does the improved performance look like in practice for customers?
Customers benefit from faster delivery and more reliable orders, with fewer shipments split across multiple boxes, better alignment of SKUs to the nearest fulfillment centers, and competitive pricing made possible by smarter inventory placement and routing, ultimately delivering orders in under two days more consistently.
From kibble to clicks: Chewy's path to the Edelman Award competition
Q: Can you give us a high-level look at how the models all work together in Chewy's replenishment ecosystem?
We built a coordinated system with three components: an allocation model translating region-level forecasts to fulfillment-center signals, a safety-stock model that handles forecast and vendor lead-time uncertainties to set service levels, and a PO-generation model that creates orders while respecting vendor constraints and capacity, resulting in an end-to-end flow from forecast to execution.

Q: Could you explain the divide-and-conquer method used to solve the problem at scale and why this approach is important for real-world retail deployment?
The approach decomposes the problem into many subproblems that can be solved in parallel on a cluster, then aggregates the results to produce a global solution, enabling scalable optimization without sacrificing accuracy.

Q: So your solution, which I believe is called the Intelligent Auto-Replenishment System, is powered by a large-scale stochastic mixed integer program. Can you give us a high-level overview of how the optimization model works and how it supports store replenishment decisions?
The model views the regional network as a whole, deciding what to ship from a central warehouse to stores to minimize total supply chain costs, including potential future lost sales, holding costs, and transportation, while respecting store capacity, warehouse availability, and other constraints.
Summoning the Data Whisperer: From Analytics+ to (data) puppet domination
Q: What do you hope is the biggest takeaway that attendees leave with after listening to you?
I hope they leave with a new way to talk about what they already know and understand the importance of storytelling in data management.
