Reviews

4.9 out of 5 stars from 16 ratings
  • Interesting topics and speakers but awful sound quality

This podcast has such an excellent roster of guest speakers, and expert discussion on fascinating topics. Unfortunately the sound quality is so poor that it’s practically not possible to listen to it when you’re out and about and there’s even a small amount of ambient noise. As I mostly listen to podcasts when commuting/going for a run (and I suspect I’m not alone here), this means I rarely find time to listen to it. I know they’re recordings of live events but please buy some better microphones... more

The economic fallout from war in the Middle East Part II: The outlook for the economy and public finances
Q: What is the size of the shock to GDP three years out, and how does it compare to past energy shocks?
Panelists explain the proposed 0.9% GDP hit in three years as a plausible upper bound if shocks persist, and compare it to past Ukraine/Russia energy shocks, suggesting it is smaller than that crisis but still material given global energy and commodity spillovers.
Taking the temperature: Spring Forecast 2026 and the prospects for borrowing, growth and living standards
Q: What do you think happens next for growth and living standards given current shocks?
The panel suggested a cautious path: growth remains fragile in the near term, but living standards can improve if wage growth strengthens and energy costs stabilise, with policy clarity and growth-oriented measures playing a key role.
Social immobility scars: The persistence of earnings gaps facing graduates from lower-income families
Q: What should policymakers focus on to close the earnings gap—school, higher education access, or labor market reforms?
The panel suggested a multifaceted approach: improving school attainment and university access, raising the quality of information and support before and during university, and implementing labor-market practices that address hidden curricula, mentorship, and representation, with a strong emphasis on early childhood interventions as the most impactful root-level solution.
Social immobility scars: The persistence of earnings gaps facing graduates from lower-income families
Q: What level of government grants or financial support existed for that cohort entering university, given tuition was low or absent at the time?
While tuition was not as high yet, maintenance loans and grants existed; attendees explained that the cost and loan terms mattered and affected the decision to pursue university, but the general participation remained relatively stable during that period.
Where is the UK economy heading?
Q: Yael, what should be prioritized between R&D and housing or technology adoption?
Prioritize simpler, broadly accessible incentives that encourage technology adoption and productivity gains, with attention to bottlenecks in housing to ease affordability constraints.
