戒是無上菩提之本，因戒可以生定，因定可以發慧，若不持戒而修行，無有是處，本經第六章四種清淨明誨，清楚地告訴我們，不持戒而修三昧者，塵不可出，縱有多智，禪定現前，亦落邪魔外道，可知持戒的重要。
虛雲法師說：「持戒的人，龍天擁護，魔外敬畏；破戒的人，鬼言大賊，掃其足跡。禪宗惠能六祖說：「心平何榮持戒，行直何用參禪」，我請問：你的心平直沒有？嬌艷的美女投入懷抱，你能不動心嗎？無理的辱罵痛打，你能不生瞋恨心嗎？你能夠不分別冤親憎愛、人我是非嗎？統統做得到，才好開大口，否則，不要說空話。」

• 高明之處：許多考生的畫作只著重於「踏花」（畫滿地花）或「馬蹄」，但皆流於表面。最終奪魁的畫作描繪了在落日時分，騎馬者歸家，幾隻蝴蝶追逐著馬蹄飛舞。這隱喻了馬蹄因踩踏過花叢而帶有香氣，引來蝴蝶，體現了「畫中有詩」的藝術最高境界。
