  • Paul Lozada

I think you need to do more background on Paul. Parts of his story sound like BS to me. Doing twenty-five years and not getting a pension does not make sense to me. There is more to that than he said. If that is not true, I would imagine that other parts of his story are not true either.

  • Why so secretive?

Who is the host of this podcast? Why doesn’t he ever introduce himself? Only podcast I know where the host is anonymous. It makes the show suspect.

And the intrusive, sudden ADVERTISEMENTS—while a guest is MID-SYLLABLE talking usually!!—are so obnoxious that they show a complete contempt for the listener. Very authoritarian. Typical cop behavior.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why This Canadian Cop Started Helping the Homeless Instead of Arresting Them
Q: How did the idea for integrating social workers with police evolve in Hamilton?
The idea grew from recognizing that cops alone could not solve homelessness and addiction; after conversations with community stakeholders and leadership, they secured funding to hire social workers and created a cross-agency model that places health professionals on calls with police, improving outcomes.
Why This Canadian Cop Started Helping the Homeless Instead of Arresting Them
Q: What motivated you to shift from traditional policing to focusing on crisis intervention and social supports?
Pete explains that witnessing mental health crises, addiction, and homelessness within his community revealed that the system needed to address root causes with compassion and collaboration, not just arrests; over time this approach became his driving why and led to programs like the Social Navigator and MSERT.
The Psychological Price: How 13 Years in Law Enforcement Changes You
Q: How did you cope with stress and what finally helped you seek help?
I leaned on workouts, therapy, and later group therapy after a pivotal shooting. Admitting vulnerability and seeking support—along with faith—allowed me to confront my nightmares, rebuild my life, and eventually retire with a plan to help others facing similar demons.
The Psychological Price: How 13 Years in Law Enforcement Changes You
Q: What was the most difficult part of your career, and when did you feel you truly understood the job?
The most difficult part wasn't just the violence but the leadership, politics, and internal department dynamics. I learned to read case law, stay disciplined, and recognize that leadership quality and integrity determine how the trauma of the job lands on people, which often felt more damaging than any single call.
The Psychological Price: How 13 Years in Law Enforcement Changes You
Q: Tell me how you got into law enforcement.
I wasn't aiming to be a cop; it happened almost by chance when a friend pitched the idea as a stable career with benefits. I had previously left a different path, and the pull of a real career in policing came during a period of travel and burnout, culminating in entering the academy in 2001 and finding my niche through mentorship and relationship-building within the department.
