Listener and friend Paul Stolp prompted this conversation/episode, mentioning how he thought a “course correction” episode would be fun. What is a course correction? Paul offered the example of Judas Priest’s Ram it Down being the wipeout and Painkil... more
2023 marks the 40th anniversary of Voivod, a band that are at the very heart of everything we do at Radical Research and everything we listen to as incorrigible music obsessives. In celebration, Voivod released Morgoth Tales, which finds the Mark V l... more
Although Ukraine’s Drudkh may be best known for its trance-inducing, minimalist black metal, Radical Research makes a case for the band’s divisive 2009 and 2010 recordings, Microcosmos and A Handful of Stars, which explore new sonic geographies. We b... more
Jeff got this text from Hunter a couple months ago: "Gorguts 'Nostalgia' is a fascinating piece of music. A slice of late '90s avant-death that refers to Pearl Jam, nu metal, noise rock and Indian raga. I mean, Damn!" And I responded, "I mean, damn, ... more

Loving this podcast! Learning about new music always rules, but I come away from each episode with new ways to think about bands and records I’ve loved, hated, or was lukewarm on for decades (which for me has been just as interesting). Keep up the great work, gentlemen! Would love a deep dive into Cynic & Portal and anything else you feel fits the discussion :)
These two know the music they cover - and are not just metal fans. Both are knowledgeable about prog, classic rock, hard rock and more. They are also both musicians and have a deep understanding of the wheres and whys of the music they cover. And if you think these guys don’t know their metal, you really aren’t paying attention.
You discover a podcast with a host that knows EVERYTHING about the subject he’s talking about. The only problem is that most of what he covers you aren’t that interested in. BUT, the Fates Warning episode was fantastic, as were his book on the band and Peter Steele, so 5 star anyway. Hopefully he can cover some of the less obscure bands once in a while. Maybe a deep dive on Queensryche or Type O’s discography.
Episodes about weird metal, bass solos, cool synths - I'm in. I've valued Jeff Wagner's opinions for over 20 years, and I've come to value Hunter Ginn's equally. Fun discussions of obsessive favorites and plenty of things I never knew about.😈
Jeff Wagner is driving this podcast, and he’s a decent writer. But a metalhead he is not. Co-host Hunter is in love with Jeff and cannot bring himself to ever disagree with anything Jeff says. They have hot takes like “back even Mortal Skuld was getting record deals” and “A Grand Declaration of War” is the best Mayhem album. For a metal podcast, these fellas really, really like and promote non-metal things.
