Alan and I may disagree on many things politically but I absolutely love this podcast. It’s wonderful to hear someone’s unfiltered thoughts on politics and get a perspective outside of my bubble and it’s also great to listen to Alan ramble about the state of metal. Feels like listening to an old friend.

  • Absolutely great

The best metal podcast in history. I could listen to this all day: Alan comes across as a lovely, warm guy (especially for a self-professed grumpy pessimist) and, being the same age and growing up in the same underground scene as myself, I can say with authority he captures the spirit better than anyone else I’ve listened to.

Never heard Primoridal, to my shame, but this podcast is unmissable. Please never stop Alan, you’re very, very good at this.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The free speech principle
Q: Is there a limit to free speech in practice?
Yes, there was a discussion about limits, acknowledging that while free speech is foundational, certain contexts (like shouting fire in a cinema) are not allowed, and that the practical limit lies in balancing rights with public safety and respect for others.
...is 1987 the greatest year in Heavy Metal history?
Q: What year from the top 20 do you feel stands out most for its overall quality?
Both hosts contend that 1987 had an extraordinary density of formative releases; the guest highlights that, taken as a whole, the year's output would still be standout even by modern standards, suggesting a consensus around its exceptional breadth and impact.
a chat w / Vorphalack from SAMAEL
Q: So when does it start where you go? Okay, that's inspired me to pick up the guitar?
I think I was a fan of music before trying to be a musician. But I think that Venom was a starting point to the whole thing.
a chat w / Vorphalack from SAMAEL
Q: What would you say the program from the gig from 84?
That was my brother program. But yeah, we had this.
Kneecap / Irish unification / Playlist protests / Who gets to do the firing in a band / ...and what is too extreme?
Q: What are your thoughts on Abzu and their firing of Melissa Moore?
Averill expresses that he is not in favor of airing dirty laundry in public and highlights the importance of seniority in bands, noting that personal conduct can lead to significant decisions to remove a member based on their behavior.
