Deep, funny, inspiring

Q: How did you develop your unique violin sound?

I started out being trained classically, but when I was 16, I started getting into different kinds of traditional music. It was a mix of influences, including classical, Greek, and Klezmer styles, that shaped my sound.

Q: Tell us about your new record and tell us like why now?

This record had a long, long gestation, a whole generation actually. I made Fidl, which was my first solo outing and it came out in 1997. It was the first all-Klezmer Fidl album, which was all about the violin.

It's about having the freedom to express who you are as an artist, to try new things without feeling restricted by traditional forms.

My father's radio show featured Yiddish music, which exposed me to it early on. Then I became involved in the klezmer scene through various projects and performers, notably Adrienne Cooper.
