R2Kast 419 – Julie McLaren on Women in Agriculture Scotland, mentoring and agricultural finance
Q: Julie, you've said you've been in the sector for 12 years and are now Vice Chair of Women in Agriculture Scotland; how did that happen?
Julie explains the progression within Women in Agriculture Scotland, the roles of chair and vice-chair, and how her experiences in banking and leadership led to taking on a prominent volunteer role to advance mentoring and sector collaboration.
Tales of a Nuffield Scholar with Alex Brewster
Q: Had you always been aware of the Nuffield, and why did you choose to apply?
Vaguely aware at first; a friend urged him to apply, and he decided to take a chance, even though he wasn't sure what it would entail. The process felt daunting but ultimately transformative.
Tales of a Nuffield Scholar with Kate Speke Adams
Q: Where do you see yourself in five years?
Kate envisions continuation of her Herefordshire hub leadership, potentially expanding the hub model to other counties if funding allows, with ongoing Landscape Recovery and soil/water projects, and hopes for multi-year funding to enable more delivery.
Tales of a Nuffield Scholar with Kate Speke Adams
Q: Tell us what The Bullock Award is, and also what the process is involved.
Kate explains that the Bullock Award is for that year group 10 years on, with cohorts from 2015-2017. Applicants submit an overview of the impact of their Nuffield work, plus possibly a short video; those shortlisted face an intensive panel, and the winner is invited to present at the Nuffield Conference, receiving recognition and sharing their story.
R2Kast 422 – Andrew Connon on leadership, policy and representing farmers
Q: What advice would you give someone aiming for a high-level role in NFU or similar unions?
Be yourself, stay true to membership, listen to the people, seize opportunities, and maintain a balance between passion for farming and effective advocacy; always be prepared to take on opportunities when they arise.
