Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

048 Normal Results, Real Pain: A Physiatrist's Case for Integrating Acupuncture • Chi Tang
Q: What exactly is happening physiologically when a needle interacts with fascial tissue?
The needle acts as a stimulus that the fascia's fibroblasts respond to; this mechanical interaction can change tissue tension, alter muscle tone, and possibly modulate neural signaling, contributing to a systemic response via the fascia–muscle–nervous system network.
049 Acupuncture for Animal Sports Performance • Kathy Murphy
Q: How do you approach identifying the primary energetic imbalance in a competing dog?
I assess patterns like qi deficiency and blood deficiency, using pulses and targeted points, while also considering behavior changes and the dog's responses to touch to guide therapy.
047 Microcurrent Strategies: Beyond Injury Healing to Performance Enhancement • Laura Christensen
Q: What's the deal with microcurrent versus milliamp current devices in athletes?
Milliamp devices can push muscles to twitch and force responses, but at high intensity they can actually decrease ATP availability and hinder tissue healing, whereas microcurrent supports ATP production and overall recovery with safer, lower currents and better waveforms.
047 Microcurrent Strategies: Beyond Injury Healing to Performance Enhancement • Laura Christensen
Q: What are the basics that the average acupuncturist needs to know about microcurrent?
The basics involve understanding that microcurrent uses much lower current levels with physiologically compatible waveforms, allowing the body to respond and heal without the overstimulation associated with higher milliamp currents. It's about choosing waveforms (preferably sine waves) and knowing that frequencies can target different neurotransmitters, anti-inflammatory pathways, and energy production.
038 Using Saam Acupuncture for Colds and Coughs • Andreas Brüch
Q: What do you do when there is significant dampness or phlegm?
When dampness or phlegm is present, I switch to Lung Chung Gyeok or Large Intestine Cheung Gok combinations to dry dampness, and I consider reversing Cheung Gok to reduce dampness if phlegm is excessive.
