第一期从涓生坐在会馆旧书桌前开始，写他的回忆。会馆里的破屋寂静又空虚，一年前他在这里等待着子君的脚步声，那些清响能让他骤然生动起来。他记得自己谈家庭专制、谈打破旧习惯、谈男女平等、谈伊孛生、谈泰戈尔、谈雪莱……子君总是微笑点头，眼里弥漫着稚气的、好奇的光泽。然后他说了一句话：“我是我自己的，他们谁也没有干涉我的权利！”这是她说的。涓生被这句话震动了许多天，觉得“中国女性，并不如厌世家所说那样的无法可施”。后来表白了。涓生在慌张中用电影上学来的方式，含泪握着子君的手，一条腿跪了下去。
这篇小说写于1920年，收录在《呐喊》中，是鲁迅早期的一篇独白式短篇小说。故事发生在“双十节”那天，N先生借由剪辫子的亲身经历，讲了一串让人笑不出来的遭遇——留学时剪了辫子被人厌恶，回国后戴上假辫子被人冷笑，索性不戴又被人追着骂“假洋鬼子”。一根头发，前后不是人。鲁迅在小说里写过一句话：“头发是我们中国人的宝贝和冤家，古今来多少人在这上头吃些毫无价值的苦呵。”这篇故事，就是N先生吃过的那些“苦”。
经济权与战斗：鲁迅说经济权是女子解放最要紧的事，比参政权更烦难，也更需要剧烈的战斗。 但他也知道，不是人人都能战斗，平和的方法也可贵——比如利用亲权来解放自己的子女，将财产平均分配给他们。然而这需要“记性”，因为人总是忘记自己受过的苦，然后照样再犯前人的错误。韧性精神：鲁迅举了天津“青皮”的例子——给人搬行李，不管你说什么，他都要两元。“青皮固然是不足为法的，而那韧性却大可以佩服。” 要求经济权也一样，不管对方说什么，都答“要经济权”。群众是看客：鲁迅说群众永远是戏剧的看客。牺牲上场，慷慨就是悲... more
