Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

She Was Rescued by SEAL Team Six. Then She Had to Rescue Herself.
Q: Can you share with us a little bit about your journey, the kidnapping and your story from that point or take us back to where we need to familiarize ourselves with you?
Jessica describes growing up in Ohio and eventually working in East Africa, where she faced a life-changing kidnapping in Somalia, the 93 days of captivity, and the immediate aftermath including the rescue by SEAL Team Six. She explains how intuition, safety decisions, and resilience carried her through the ordeal and how the experience shaped her mission to advocate for disability inclusion and trauma recovery.
She Saw the Butterfly Before I Did
Q: Did you have any mentors?
Yes, mentors shaped her trajectory; the guest explains a pivotal mentor who helped her see her potential and encouraged her to pursue adaptive PE.
What If Your Most Impactful Work Happened From Bed?
Q: What advice would you give someone starting to navigate ME/CFS and seek advocacy?
Stay determined, connect with others online, educate yourself, and use your voice to push for education and policy change. Don't wait for the system to recognize you; build a movement with others who share the experience and leverage online platforms to raise awareness and drive action.
You’re Not Going to Read Again
Q: Tell us about the book and how listeners can engage with it.
Molly discusses her book as a blend of nonfiction and fiction that navigates memory, identity, and adapting to a body that isn't always predictable. She highlights resilience, the importance of reading recovery, and the ambiguity the narrative preserves, inviting readers to engage with the process rather than seek a neat ending.
You’re Not Going to Read Again
Q: How has the concussion and its aftermath transformed your identity and approach to life and writing?
The concussion prompted Molly to rethink her pace, boundaries, and what she can and cannot do. She describes the emotional journey of accepting a new normal, the integration of vision therapy and sensory strategies, and using both fiction and non-fiction to explore and articulate the nuances of life after injury.
