We’re book people, and we want to examine the questions that lie at the heart of that life: why do books, specifically, matter? In a digi... more

Please stop interrupting each other. As a listener, this is so anxiety-producing not to mention frustrating. Allow each other to complete a thought, then respond.
I tuned in to this podcast for the first time because I wanted to learn about the publishing industry. What I learned was about the political opinions of the hosts. I will not be back.
This is probably my fave podcast of all time. I binged 40 episodes during a solo weekend trip a few years ago, and whenever a new episode drops I listen immediately. Thank you Laura and Erik for being a voice of sanity, a shot of humor, and a glimpse of publishing from the inside. Your work is so appreciated
The agents on this podcast are self-reflective, smart, transparent and seem to be wanting to present differently for BIPOC writers.
I appreiate this insider look into publishing. The hosts are so smart. I left publishing years ago and am always dying to hear what they have to say.

Two hosts dissect the book industry with humor and candor, frequently unpacking how publishing realities—marketing pressures, debut dynamics, and imprint consolidation—shape which authors break through and which books get seen. Episodes often thread together industry infrastructure, author branding, and the tension between artistic aims and market forces, while also offering practical tips for writers, editors, and agents. A signature through-line is a desire to illuminate behind-the-scenes dynamics, from agent-query realities to the politics of literary prestige, all delivered with sharp wit and accessible analysis. Noteworthy traits include a candid, opinionated style, a willingness to call out industry missteps, and a knack for turning c... more
