  • Essential for birth work entrepreneurs

This podcast, and Niamh’s work in general, is filling a gap in business information that will work for birthworkers. For a lot of us, the hard selling, aggressive self-promotion and “hustle culture” promoted for a lot of small businesses just isn’t a fit. I’m thankful for Niamh’s guidance and wisdom in this space!

  • No matter how long you’re in business you still have lots to learn!

Even after 11 + years running a private practice I'm picking up great tips and loving all the wonderful insights Niamh has to offer with regards to improving business strategies, fighting the dreadful imposter syndrome, supporting our colleagues in business, networking, avoiding burnout etc etc etc. However I don’t think she will manage to get me talking to camera on Instagram no matter what she says!😉Niamh is a calm and easy listen and the podcasts are short and snappy so a nice quick listen. ... more

Ep 72. From Teacher to Birth Worker: A Story of Courage, Change & Choice
Q: What were you doing before you became self-employed, and what sparked the move into birth work?
I spent nearly two decades as a Home Economics teacher, but after a traumatic birth experience and discovering supportive networks like Quidu, I realized I could build a more aligned life and career by training in lactation consulting and ante/postnatal education, eventually moving toward entrepreneurship while balancing family needs.
Ep: 83: From Zero to Fully Booked: One Doula's Whirlwind Journey
Q: What tips does Orla offer for people earlier in their journey to grow their client base?
Orla emphasizes fully believing in the value of the work, being willing to be visible, and sticking with marketing and visibility until momentum builds. She notes that initial effort can feel uphill but eventually leads to a flow of inquiries and clients.
Ep: 83: From Zero to Fully Booked: One Doula's Whirlwind Journey
Q: What was the first paid service Orla set up, and how did she transition from volunteer work to charging for services?
Orla explains that after initially providing virtual and in-person support as a volunteer, she recognized the need to formalize her offerings and began charging for services. She describes the early days of juggling pregnancy, training, and client work, and how she gradually built paid offerings while managing family responsibilities.
Ep,. 79: Stop Overcomplicating Your Marketing: What Actually Works for Birth Workers
Q: And what made you take the leap from the corporate career to working for yourself?
Frustration with a rich-but-slow-moving corporate environment led to a desire to help women and stop enriching others at the expense of ethics and energy; she wanted to combine marketing acumen with a values-driven approach.
Ep. 76: Fluctuating Income? Here’s How to Finally Feel Financially Secure
Q: Could you tell people a little bit about how you got into this work?
Shana and Vanessa describe their move from teaching budgeting in traditional programs to focusing on practical, non-restrictive budgeting for birth workers, driven by the lack of budgeting education and a desire to remove shame around money.
