  • Cozy and engaging

Love the pod! Have been a fan of Victoria since Red Queen and started following her on socials. When I found out she was going to be going a podcast, I was immediately interested! Soman and her chemistry and banter is so natural and effortless and the topics are engaging. I do wish the hosts spend a little less time discussing personal goals and dedicate more time on the actual topic discussion! Love love, keep going!

  • Great content but…

I have enjoyed this podcast. I’ve listened to every episode the day it’s released. A couple of things I dislike: Victoria talks over Soman. She stopped before but she’s back to doing it and quite frequently. Since the volume is uneven, Soman gets drowned out during those moments. Also while I do like that the hosts have prepped and have notes, since their arguments are pretty long it definitely sounds like one or both of them are reading essays. Which- they are! So what started as a solid 4-5 ⭐️... more

  • Such a good host pairing!

I watch this as much for the educational elements as for the dynamic between Victoria and Soman. The two are complete opposites and yet their friendship and banter make for such a compelling show! I look forward to listening every week.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Can We Get Teenage Boys To Read Again?
Q: So let me start by asking you a question, which is, in your time as an educator, can you take us through the evolution of how teenage boys have reacted to books from your point of view? Is it always been the same or has there been a change? What are you seeing on the ground?
Rose Brock discusses how the dynamic has persisted over decades, noting that the challenge isn't new and that teachers must adapt—via spaces where boys feel safe, and methods that acknowledge their realities—while acknowledging broader shifts in formats and engagement.
Do Trigger Warnings Ruin Books?
Q: What idea sparks for you first when creating a story?
For Victoria, ideas spark from images and the core concept, drawing from various inspirations like Hunger Games or Pirates of the Caribbean to build a shared concept; Soman adds that the hook and long-term resonance of an idea are essential, often taking years to develop before drafting.
Do Trigger Warnings Ruin Books?
Q: From Olivia, what is involved in a contract for a book when you sign with a publishing house?
The contract outlines the publication terms, with the advance, delivery deadlines, and rights (movie, theater, graphic novels) being central, and it emphasizes the need for strong representation from an agent or lawyer to negotiate fair terms.
What Happens Behind The Scenes Of A Book Tour?
Q: From Rachel, what are your thoughts on book teasers and content on social media; do they spoil the story?
They should give the vibe without spoiling twists; the authors prefer not to telegraph plot points and aim to balance marketing with maintaining reader discovery, treating books like movies in terms of atmosphere rather than spoilers.
What Happens Behind The Scenes Of A Book Tour?
Q: From Julie, can you talk about trade reviews like Publishers Weekly or School Library Journal and how much weight they carry?
Reviews do carry weight for the trade and can influence perceptions, but you can still be successful without stars; early reviews can be terrifying, especially from trade publications, but the ultimate impact varies and readers may differ.
