Meghan and Collin are not leaders in the pet sitting industry. Instead they encourage horrible business practices including nickeling and diming clients. They have a Facebook group called “sitter confessionals”. Someone posted that they did a meet and greet and sent an invoice to the client, which was not paid. The client decided to go a different route and canceled the request. The sitter reached out to the group. Several people commented to charge for meet and greets. I made my own comment in ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

727: From Founder to Future with Kaz Kelly
Q: How important is the 'handover' period, and how can it be optimized?
Handover is a compulsory part of the sale, but it should be minimized and highly structured, focusing on what the buyer needs to run the business while the seller steps back. If handled well, it prevents extended control by the former owner and helps preserve buyer confidence.
727: From Founder to Future with Kaz Kelly
Q: What are the key boundaries founders should set with clients and staff before selling?
Founders should establish clear separation between personal and business communications, empower teams to make decisions, and ensure there are defined processes and manuals so buyers can step in without depending on the founder for day-to-day actions.
727: From Founder to Future with Kaz Kelly
Q: Kaz, why do founders avoid exit planning, and what is the biggest missing piece in the typical advisory team?
Founders often neglect exit planning due to emotional investment and the perception that lawyers, brokers, and accountants will handle everything. The missing piece is proactive, cross-disciplinary guidance that looks at the entire exit journey—emotional readiness, boundaries, and a holistic audit that prepares the business for sale.
719: Hard Conversations Build Better Businesses with Whitney Guison
Q: Are there any misconceptions about joining a chamber of commerce, and how do you walk people through the decision to join?
Whitney explains she doesn't push membership but outlines the programming, benefits, and access; the decision should be based on whether the chamber offers the resources and relationships a business needs, rather than a guaranteed number of leads.
717: Building a Nonprofit From Grief, Love, and Service with Janelle Vargas
Q: What are the practical steps taken to establish the nonprofit?
She describes leveraging prior pet-business experience, obtaining 501(c)(3) status with the help of a tax accountant, partnering with pet stores and services for donations, and creating a simple, clear mission focused on dog walking, pet sitting, and pet food assistance.
