extremely thorough thoughtful and engaging, the host is very patient and keeps the listener in mind, im so glad to have found this show. several times i have looked up information from this show only to find that PHOIP is the only source, showing that he uses a lot of original source documents or other hard to find scholarship. a true labor of love.

as someone who is far from an academic, but has an interest in communism, and chinese history, matthew does an absolutely incredible job in teaching this very complicated history in a very approachable and enjoyable way
This show is a labor of love. I listen to it everyday during my lunch break. Sometimes I forget who this or that guy was or what the May 4th Movement was about but it’s easy to look back at previous show notes and refresh my memory. I prefer history podcasts and this one’s my favorite, second favorite being Age of Napoleon Podcast
