Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Cara Achterberg "Who Will Let the Dogs Out"
Q: What advice would you give to listeners who want to help but don't know where to start?
Start by talking to local shelter leaders and policymakers, advocate for open intake where appropriate, consider adopting rather than buying, support breed-specific rescues to move dogs out of municipal shelters, and get involved in community education and fundraiser efforts to sustain shelter initiatives.
Cara Achterberg "Who Will Let the Dogs Out"
Q: Can you summarize the three core pillars you believe are essential to improving shelter outcomes?
The three pillars are leadership to drive real change and accountability, veterinary access to ensure medical care and prevent needless euthanasia, and active community engagement to support shelters through volunteers, adopters, and advocacy.
Cara Achterberg "Who Will Let the Dogs Out"
Q: What sparked the formation of Who Will Let the Dogs Out and what was the motivation behind focusing on southern shelters?
Cara explains that after visiting shelters during her book-writing trips, she realized many in the public remained unaware of what was happening in southern shelters, which motivated her to start a dedicated nonprofit in 2021 to document conditions, advocate for improvements, and bring targeted resources to rural shelters.
PawsGo Pawdcast: Old Dog, New Dog — and a New Puppy Named Lenny!
Q: Can you share a personal story from your experiments or training philosophy that illustrates your approach to puppyhood and canine socialization?
A key example is allowing dogs to gather data by walking separate, parallel paths and observing each other from a safe distance, which reduces anxiety and helps them learn about each other on their own terms.
PawsGo Pawdcast: Old Dog, New Dog — and a New Puppy Named Lenny!
Q: What are the essential steps for introducing a puppy to an older dog to minimize stress and maximize a lasting friendship?
Create barriers and controlled introductions, have separate enrichment activities, let the older dog retreat when needed, and gradually blend activities like joint walks with gates and on-leash management until both dogs are comfortable.
