Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

E72 • Feel the Fear, Do it Anyway • FREDERIKE MIGOM, dir. of ‘Everyone’s Sorry Nowadays’ at Berlinale
Q: Tell me about the first time you said to yourself, I'm a filmmaker.
Migom recalls a gradual realization after studying and working in various film roles, the breakthrough coming once she secured funding for a project, which made her feel officially recognized as a director.
E72 • Feel the Fear, Do it Anyway • FREDERIKE MIGOM, dir. of ‘Everyone’s Sorry Nowadays’ at Berlinale
Q: Tell me about your doc.
Migom explains the documentary centers on youth in a psychiatric hospital, told through their eyes, and contrasts realism with the subjective inner life of its young subjects.
E71 • Don’t Wait For Perfect Conditions • JEREMY WORKMAN, dir. of ‘Secret Mall Apartment’ now on Netflix
Q: Why did you choose a non-linear, meta presentation rather than a straight-ahead documentary?
The nonlinear approach allowed the film to explore larger themes such as artistry, community, and the absurdity of the situation, while still delivering entertainment and nostalgia; it also enabled the film to reflect on itself as it unfolds.
E71 • Don’t Wait For Perfect Conditions • JEREMY WORKMAN, dir. of ‘Secret Mall Apartment’ now on Netflix
Q: What was the process of filming inside the mall like, especially given the limitations of early-2000s gear?
They used small, affordable cameras from Radio Shack, shot in difficult locations like eye-beam structures, and recorded for four years, creating a rich but bounded archive that could be shaped into a cohesive narrative with selective reenactments and a rebuilt set.
E71 • Don’t Wait For Perfect Conditions • JEREMY WORKMAN, dir. of ‘Secret Mall Apartment’ now on Netflix
Q: How did Secret Mall Apartment begin and what made you decide to pursue it as a documentary?
The project started with a chance meeting and a unique group of artists living inside a mall; to make it compelling, the pitch was to go beyond a simple prank movie and explore gentrification, life inside the mall, and the artists' broader projects, all told with a playful, non-linear approach. Financing followed quickly due to prior success, enabling the team to self-distribute and later transition to Netflix.
