2003年火热一时的电视剧《金粉世家》，让“张恨水”这一名字重新回到了许多普通观众与读者的视野。但比起民国时期张恨水红遍大江南北、“妇孺皆知”的情况，仍可谓相去甚远。张恨水是活跃于20世纪20-40年代的通俗小说大家，在几十年间写出了百余部中长篇小说，其中的《金粉世家》《啼笑因缘》等几部代表作，更成为现象级的作品。虽然绝大多数写作不脱离情爱题材，但张恨水的“俗”，主要是贴近平民视角和人间本色，并内含着对陈旧套路的变新和悲悯的格调。
