“知识分子”这个词我们时常使用，却未必了解其背后的历史。它源于19世纪末法国的德雷福斯事件，原本是右翼用来嘲讽左拉、雨果等为冤案发声之人的贬称：指责他们“半知半解”、脱离民众。然而正是这样的起点，意外塑造了知识分子守护良知、批判不公的精神基因。
这一基因在不同文明里生根。在俄国，知识分子背负对专制的批判与对平民的忏悔；在中国，则延续了传统士大夫“至于道”的使命意识。从洋务运动中的官僚士大夫，到五四时期胡适、鲁迅等新学人，中国知识分子逐步完成从传统士大夫向现代公共角色的转变。
