1900年6月22日，庚子国变的前夜，一个湖北籍道士在敦煌莫高窟清理流沙时，偶然打开了一个被封闭近九百年的洞窟。洞中堆满了从北朝到宋代的经卷、文书与绢画，总计超过7万件。此后的十余年间，英国的斯坦因、法国的伯希和、日本的大谷光瑞探险队、俄国的奥登堡考察队相继到来，以极低的代价带走了大批珍贵文书与绢画；而在国内，晚清官僚的漠视、推诿与监守自盗，同样令人触目惊心。藏经洞文物就这样在帝国的黄昏中四散流离。
