Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Cultural relations in conflict: listening and learning
Q: What would you say to the idea that there is a choice between hard power and soft power in the current geopolitical climate?
Soft power can and should operate alongside hard power, with smart power prioritizing diplomacy and long-term relationship-building as the initial approach before any short-term coercive measures.
Cultural relations in conflict: listening and learning
Q: You've worked on a number of programs in countries that have experienced conflict. What would you say you've learned through that about the process of building trust over the long term?
Key lessons include prioritizing localization, including youth and civil society voices, and building trust through sustained, on-the-ground engagement rather than top-down, one-off interventions.
The long game: diplomacy in an age of anger
Q: Can you give our listeners just a little bit of your journey as a diplomat?
Laurie discusses his experiences during critical historical events, including the fall of communism and the challenges of modern diplomacy.
Radical inclusion: driving social change with and for young disabled people
Q: What does radical inclusion mean in a policy setting?
We need to put people with disabilities in our minds while drafting policies and engage them in the process for real representation and decision making.
Radical inclusion: driving social change with and for young disabled people
Q: What do you think brought you into working with people with disabilities?
It was part of my journey with the British Council in the development field where we started focusing on including people with disabilities as a main target rather than just a quota.
