  • Highly recommend. This podcast has inspired me from the other side of the globe.

After researching leaders in the philanthropy and fundraising space for my community work in Australia, the One Visit Away podcast has consistently been the most refreshing and inspiring.

Kevin’s holistic approach stands out it’s never just about the gift, but about doing life with the donor and showing up as a decent human being

  • Only sorry Kevin OVA wasn’t here 30 years ago!

I discovered Kevin on LinkedIn a couple of years ago and always liked what he had to say - and learned from it. I have been a gift planning officer for 28 years and in university advancement for 36 years. I sure wish Kevin and OVA were around when I got started as I’m only a year from retirement. I’m going to soak up as much wisdom between now and then as possible and share with colleagues often!

  • Such a *gift*!

I have no idea how I stumbled upon One Visit Away, but wow, what a gift. No pun intended, really. But indeed, this podcast is a gift in so many ways. Kevin’s conversations are so enjoyable and I’m learning SO MUCH ahead of some potential upcoming fundraising activities.

Whether you’re in development or not, give this a listen. You’ll pick up gems that are valuable for all kinds of roles and relationships.

    Thank you, Kevin!

  • Love the conversations and fundamentals

I was recently introduced to this podcast by a colleague on my team. I appreciate the evergreen and fundamental principles that lead to success and especially loved the decade out gift vs the next or immediate gift. This work is relational not transactional. Thanks for the inspiration!

#262 Want to be Great at Major Gifts? Learn to Listen! with Kat Landa
Q: How should organizations vet fundraising candidates to avoid bad hires?
Ask for concrete, diverse references (direct reports, peers, and donors), verify long-term donor relationships, and assess honesty about past experiences; don't rely on polished stories alone.
#262 Want to be Great at Major Gifts? Learn to Listen! with Kat Landa
Q: What makes someone capable of succeeding in major gift fundraising beyond obvious sales skills?
Beyond surface skills, success hinges on listening ability, emotional intelligence, and the capacity to align a donor's story with the organization's mission, plus a strong cultural and mission fit with the hiring organization.
#257 Anyone Can Have a Future Greater Than Their Past with Cary Sanders
Q: Who are you, and why are you here?
I'm Cary Sanders, CEO of Jumpstart, and I'm here to share how a background that once looked like a dead end became a pathway to transforming many lives through a program that starts inside prison and continues after release, supported by generous donors who see real, measurable impact.
#256 Get This Man A Job with Matt Larson
Q: Have you or any of your close relatives served in the Navy?
Matt discusses how his grandfather served in the Navy, leading to a humorous misunderstanding during their first conversation.
#255 Prospect Development and Rising From The Ashes of Our Lives with Tim Wilson
Q: Do you ever get to challenge someone on moving a prospect from one category to another?
Yes, I do face pushback, especially when it comes to moving prospects out of portfolios. It can be tricky to navigate those conversations effectively.
