Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 9: All in the Family with Deepali Kalia
Q: What have been the biggest challenges and how do you handle them without compromising quality?
The biggest ongoing challenges are sourcing and retaining skilled artisans, real estate for workshops, and tariffs. We combat these by keeping everything in-house, maintaining tight quality control, and iterating designs with our team in India and in the US to stay nimble without sacrificing craft integrity.
Episode 9: All in the Family with Deepali Kalia
Q: What makes your approach to artisans different from typical industry practices?
We pay daily wages but also provide bonuses, vacation time, medical coverage, and education sponsorship for an artisan's child, ensuring a sense of security and belonging. We want artisans to feel valued so they'll stay and pass the craft to the next generation.
Episode 9: All in the Family with Deepali Kalia
Q: Tell me how you decided block printing would be your core focus and what that process looked like for you.
We started with block printing in the export houses and bridal work in India, but we were unhappy with outsourcing in the US. We decided to bring production in-house to control quality, and opened our own block print workshop in Delhi where in-house artisans design, carve, and print, sharing profits with them.
