Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Hanka Mayhew: The Multilingual Advocate for Aphasia Awareness"
Q: When you talk at events, do you primarily discuss your stroke or the Say Aphasia project, and how do you balance those topics?
She weaves together her personal stroke experience with the broader Say Aphasia mission, using both to illustrate the ongoing need for support and awareness in the aphasia community.
Hanka Mayhew: The Multilingual Advocate for Aphasia Awareness"
Q: Hi, Hanka. Thanks for coming on the show. With your languages, how does aphasia affect the other languages beyond English?
Although English remains the most accessible, other languages are impacted variably; some like Spanish are harder to access, while reading remains possible, and with practice the other languages slowly come back at different paces.
Life Beyond Aphasia: Supporting Care Partners and Building a Movement
Q: How does your program support care partners beyond the initial rehabilitation phase?
The program provides a 12-month roadmap with weekly training, live group sessions, and downloadable materials to help care partners manage daily routines, communicate effectively, and reduce burnout, all delivered via telepractice.
Finding Words: AI and Aphasia
Q: On the subject of chatbots, can they really replace human conversation? Can you have a chat with a chatbot?
Chatbots can support tightly scripted interactions and rehearse predictable scenarios, but they currently struggle with natural, spontaneous back-and-forth in real conversations; time and pacing adjustments are essential for aphasia users.
International Aphasia Awareness Campaign with Claire Bennington
Q: How does fundraising work for you?
We have different methods for raising income, including memberships, grant applications, and events like long lunches.
