America holds hundreds of millions of acres of land in trust for the public — national parks, forests, wildlife refuges, wilderness areas, and the waters off our coasts. Right now, that inheritance is being taken, not in secret, but in plain sight, while the country's attention is elsewhere.

The finale of this 6-part documentary series offers hope and a vision of what public lands could still become if people are willing to stand up for the places they love.
"The Inheritance" opens with Ada Limón, the 24th U.S. Poet Laureate, who spent ... more
In the 1970s, Bill Hedden took a job at the Atlas uranium mill on the banks of the Colorado River in Moab. He was lucky: a spot on the construction crew kept him away from the mill's most lethal work — the acid tanks, the yellowcake hearth, the men s... more
Every argument for dismantling America's public lands is built to sound reasonable: we need affordable housing; the West shouldn't be run by faceless bureaucrats in Washington; public lands represent a broken promise to the states. Episode four, "The... more
Who really owns America's public lands, and who is trying to take them away?
Episode three, "The Plunderers," follows the money. It opens with four hunters from Missouri who crossed from one corner of public land to another without ever touching a w... more
Episode two, "The Land," is the origin story: how the United States came to hold 640 million acres in trust for the public, how concentrated wealth plundered and privatized much of it in the 1800s, and how the nation pulled back from the brink to bui... more
Last summer, millions of Americans rose up to defeat Senator Mike Lee's plan to sell off 3.5 million acres of public land. Hunters and anglers, climbers, veterans, and tribal nations all joined the fight.
It felt like a victory. It turned out to be ... more
Public lands belong to all of us. Right now, that inheritance is being taken, not in secret, but in plain sight.
Last year, Americans rallied to stop a plan to sell off public land — and won. But the fight that made headlines mattered far less than ... more
I’ve listened to many podcasts about federal public lands. This is the best. Full stop. It’s fact and history based, but still focusing on today’s issues. There are lots of extremely qualified guests that make the listening very engaging. Keep the episodes coming!
Outstanding blend of history, geography, and politics, delivered clearly and without hyperbole.
This interesting and informative podcast is hosted by two of the most influential and knowledgeable public land advocates over the past several decades. It’s essential for understanding our public lands and the threats posed by the Trump administration and especially Utah’s politicians.
This is a stunningly informative, well researched, compellingly told podcast. Bill Hedden and John Leahy straight forwardly lay out the alarming facts about how we Americans are being swindled out of our public lands for private gains. Please listen and learn so we can do something to stop the steal before it is too late.
This series is so important as the public lands belong to the people and to open them to exploitation is heart wrenching. Every inch of un-exploited wild land is a treasure for future generations and this program is offering the backstory that I missed.
This is an extraordinary story, beautifully told. Thank you!
An important and well researched story told in an engaging way. I look forward to listening to all the episodes.
Everyone who appreciates the opportunity to fish, hunt, hike, camp or bike on public land needs to hear this
This is such an important podcast that reveals another way this administration is stealing from us. This should go viral so everyone is aware how our public lands are being destroyed. It would be wonderful is Chris Hayes could cover this on his podcast Why is this Happening.
A beautiful narrative and a compelling argument. All Americans who love their country should hear this.
I can't believe I didn't know about this. We all need to pay attention to this.
This is a beautifully executed story that reveals the extreme political and business powers that remain hidden and thus dangerously elusive to mankind and nature. Time to raise awareness. Send to a friend!
I had no idea about the way the One Big Beautiful Bill completely gutted the protection of our public lands. This podcast put it in perspective for me, helping me understand how I (like every American) own the public lands, and how those lands were sold out to the interests of the wealthy few at the expense of the rest of us, behind closed doors and without any review by most of Congress or the public. What’s happening is frankly disgusting, and you deserve to know the whole story.
This is such an important podcast. I had no idea of what the “One Big Beautiful Bill” had mandated for our public lands. The podcast makes it clear that this issue crosses political lines. The coalitions built across those lines have made a real difference in the past and need to again. Thank you to all involved in making this critical podcast.
