  • Be Your Own Gatekeeper.

Smart, great hosts, pacing and information. This premier Pod Cast is the best introduction to Indi film making class you could ever take. Even though I am a 40 year film veteran who listens to a lot of industry podcasts, this one was fresh and so well done.

Matthew Cervi On Producing Movies You’d Pay to See
Q: What's the lane that Cervi brings to the table as a producer, and how does he get projects off the ground?
He looks for projects he loves, aims for strong, genre-driven material, and focuses on developing or polishing a script before committing, then leverages relationships, sales, and funding sources to move it into production.
Final Destination: Bloodlines To Freaks Underground: Co-Director Zach Lipovsky & DP Stirling Bancroft Return To Their Roots With An Indie Sci-Fi Epic | LIVE SHOW
Q: How many locations actually did you have? You had the house, the base. Let's get into that. And then how you designed the lighting and the visual style of the movie specifically with Freaks Underground?
They leaned into a single primary location for Freaks and used a combination of natural light, practicals, and carefully controlled color to create depth and mood. For Freaks Underground, they expanded locations but still kept a tight crew, using innovative lighting and volume work to simulate broader settings while maintaining a low budget.
Final Destination: Bloodlines To Freaks Underground: Co-Director Zach Lipovsky & DP Stirling Bancroft Return To Their Roots With An Indie Sci-Fi Epic | LIVE SHOW
Q: Well, and how were you raising the money even at that point?
They initially relied on close friends and family, then gradually brought in a bit more through actors who could help secure additional funds. Even when a larger cast or more expensive elements appeared likely, they chose to move forward with whatever was available, ensuring they could shoot on a defined date regardless of the remaining funds.
How a Sundance Rejection Sparked a Film Revolution | Dan Mirvish On Founding Slamdance
Q: What practical strategies help indie filmmakers get cast and crew on a micro-budget?
Develop relationships with talent agents and managers, leverage start dates to secure availability, use voiceover parts to accommodate schedules, and cultivate a network of assistants who can mobilize talent quickly.
How a Sundance Rejection Sparked a Film Revolution | Dan Mirvish On Founding Slamdance
Q: What sparked Slamdance's creation and how did it survive the Sundance rivalry?
A group of filmmakers, frustrated by Sundance's dominance, organized renegade screenings and built Slamdance to support first-time directors with small budgets, resiliently growing a community that stayed true to its roots while influencing the broader festival ecosystem.
