  • Superb

I was pretty excited to see David Ellenbogen's radio show here on iTunes. Im a regular listener in Brooklyn, his show is from uptown Manhattan. For anyone who isn't familiar, Dave hosts live performances in the studio and does interviews with the musicians. Its a cool format and he picks some really diverse musicians to play. I recently heard an amazing show he had with Dennis McKenna, the scientific and empirical brother of intra-stellar voyager Terrence McKenna. It wasn't musical, more sc... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

George Wein remembers Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis and the birth of Newport Jazz
Q: How did you transition from playing music to starting Storyville, the club in Boston?
He explains how his opportunity came through the Savoy ownership and manager, leading to a club that balanced affordable pricing with a steadily booked schedule, which taught him the practicalities of running a venue and managing artists.
Booker Stardrum talks SML, Harry Parch, and the rhythm of raindrops
Q: How does your lineage with Harry Parch and your father influence your sound today?
My family's history with microtonality and instrument-building, plus Parch's just intonation, provides a through-line that informs timbral choices, instrument construction, and a philosophy of making music that prioritizes organic resonance and exploratory tuning over fixed scales.
Booker Stardrum talks SML, Harry Parch, and the rhythm of raindrops
Q: What drew you to perform at Big Ears Festival and how do you describe the band's approach to improvisation on stage?
The draw is the festival's singular environment and the chance for the group to explore live, in-the-moment music; we don't plan exact on-stage actions, we listen, react, and let the music unfold collectively, which makes each performance unique.
Alam Khan
Q: How much do we owe the modern presentation of Raga to your family?
My father and Ravi Shankar popularized Raga music formats and made it accessible to global audiences, marking a significant evolution in how Indian classical music was presented.
Alam Khan
Q: Did you ever get a chance to ask him any particular musical questions?
Yes, Zakirji emphasized the importance of not being afraid to try new things, which encouraged me to explore contemporary styles while staying true to my classical roots.
