臺灣鳯山縣縣令出缺，由臺灣知府王珍自攝縣政，
但王珍讓其次子代理。
王珍次子貪橫苛刻，激起民眾強烈不滿。
一七二一年（康熙六十年）四月，
朱一貴在岡山號召民眾起事，
自稱「大明重興，大元帥朱」，
隨後攻破府城，席捲臺灣南部，
自立為「中興王」，定年號「永和」…
可惜朱一貴和他的部將們見識不足，急著稱王、作官，
會有什麼下場呢？

「清代臺灣三大民變」之中第一個爆發的「朱一貴事件」。
是清朝時期台灣首位發動的大型武裝起義，為時不到三個月但聲勢浩大，因當時吏政貪汙，而朱一貴又跟明朝皇族同姓，遂以反清復明為號召，穿上歌仔戲中使用的龍袍，登基為中興王。
朱一貴事件過後，臺灣開始有「鴨母皇帝」名號出現，因為聽說他操練群鴨，猶如指揮軍隊一樣，還能夠「一鴨生兩蛋」，傳說綿延兩、三百年，成為眾所周知的鴨母王傳奇故事。
