  • Good but where are the plants?

It’s a great scientific podcast, but apart from one episode I could find with Dr John Manning, it seems far more focussed on zoology than botany. Maybe there are some further back, but just a note for any new listeners, its more about organisms that move than organisms with roots.

  • Please invest in some better mics and make the show less scripted

As a taxonomist and phylogeneticist, I want to love this show. But after so many episodes I would’ve thought that the hosts would’ve invested in some better recording equipment. The hosts always have a weird echo, and the guests (probably recording from just a zoom recording with their internal computer mic) sound so muffled it’s almost impossible to understand them. It’s so bad sometimes I end up shutting off the episode because I can’t understand a single thing that’s being said. Not only that... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

A New Cordyceps Spider with Alex Bently
Q: Why is this work important beyond describing a new species?
It showcases the value of interdisciplinary collaboration, citizen science, and local community engagement, highlighting biodiversity in the Amazon and illustrating how understanding mimicry and ecological interactions can inform conservation and sustainable development.
A New Cordyceps Spider with Alex Bently
Q: What has that press attention been like for you and your co-authors?
The response has been wild and validating; the team anticipated some interest but the level of curiosity and media outreach, including opportunities with major outlets, has exceeded expectations, reinforcing the importance and excitement around the discovery.
Who Describes the Spiders? With Katherine Montana and Cláudia Xavier
Q: Can you share the story of how your paper came about and what you set out to ask?
We explored academic diversity and access in taxonomy, examining who has training and resources to describe species, because this shapes what knowledge is produced and how collaborative taxonomy can be.
Two New Tachinid Flies with Rodrigo Dios
Q: What was it like to work with museum collections and describe new species from older specimens?
It's a balance of traditional morphology work, careful examination of terminalia, and integrating molecular data; museums like the Smithsonian provide access to types and historical data that are invaluable for accurate revisions and species descriptions.
Two New Tachinid Flies with Rodrigo Dios
Q: Can you briefly explain what parasitism and parasitoidism mean in the context of tachinid flies?
Parasitoids eventually kill their host as part of their life cycle, unlike typical parasites; some rare cases may not immediately kill the host, but the general idea is that development inside the host disrupts or ends the host's life.
