Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Kate Dannies, "Conscripting Breadwinner Soldiers in the Late Ottoman Empire: Family, Law and War" (Edinburgh UP, 2026)
Q: What was the starting point of your analysis for how the modern army emerged in 1826?
I outline a long transformation from the Janissaries to a centralized army, highlighting how the state sought to balance military power with agricultural and family needs, starting with modernization efforts and a shift in recruitment strategy.
Kate Dannies, "Conscripting Breadwinner Soldiers in the Late Ottoman Empire: Family, Law and War" (Edinburgh UP, 2026)
Q: Could you start us off, please, by introducing yourself a little bit and tell us why you decided to write this book? What kinds of questions are you pursuing in this project?
I'm an Ottoman historian and I'm exploring how family, law, and military reform intersected as the empire moved from a janissary-based system to a recruitment-based army, with a focus on how this affected social reproduction, gender roles, and state capacity.
Paris Papamichos Chronakis, "The Business of Transition: Jewish and Greek Merchants of Salonica from Ottoman to Greek Rule" (Stanford UP, 2024)
Q: How did Zionism affect Salonika's Jewish community and its relationship with Greek society?
Zionism was a multifaceted force—helping Jews adapt to a Greek-majority setting and claim dual identities, while Greek anti-Zionism often framed Jews as un-Greek; the dynamic illustrates complex integration rather than simple emigration.
Paris Papamichos Chronakis, "The Business of Transition: Jewish and Greek Merchants of Salonica from Ottoman to Greek Rule" (Stanford UP, 2024)
Q: Why does the book organize its material in three parts, and how did you choose that periodization?
He explains the periodization aligns with political changes from the late Ottoman era through the Balkan Wars and World War I, culminating in the 1919-1922 transition to Greek rule, arguing for viewing the 1910s as a decade of significant learning and Hellenization rather than a mere period of limbo.
Paris Papamichos Chronakis, "The Business of Transition: Jewish and Greek Merchants of Salonica from Ottoman to Greek Rule" (Stanford UP, 2024)
Q: Can you tell us something about yourself and the origins of the book?
Chronakis discusses his background in Modern Greek History, his move from Thessaloniki to study and teach in the US, and how his interests in the middle classes and multi-ethnic coexistence shaped the book's aims.
