Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Fringe in 15 with Jane Aster Roe and Mackenzie Langdon (Unsung The Accidental Villains of History)
Q: What inspired Unsung and how did it come together?
The idea sprang from a 10-minute piece created in college, which the writers developed into a longer show exploring lesser-known figures involved in historical events, presented in a playful, reimagined way.
Fringe in 15 with Nathalie Younglai, Josette Jorge & Damon Bradley Jang (First Kiss)
Q: What's the elevator pitch synoptic for the show?
A coming-of-age story about a teen in the 1980s who wants her first kiss before she turns 16, only to realize that the movies of that era aren't a true reflection of her reality, prompting self-discovery and critique of pop culture from the perspective of an Asian-Canadian family.
Fringe in 15 with Marla Torgerson (Sinner. A Musical Tragicomedy About Breaking Up With White Jesus)
Q: Tell us a little bit about the history. When did you start writing it and any processes that have led up to this Fringe Festival?
Marla explains writing began in Seville during 2019 with a rapid burst of creativity, followed by the pandemic and a relocation that allowed the work to gestate in Alberta. The piece evolved from a long, three-and-a-half-hour original to a trimmed, 90-minute Toronto version with a full band and additional choir finale, reflecting her shifting life circumstances and the show's ongoing workshop process across multiple Fringe experiences.
Fringe in 15 with Declan Meagher & Natalie Kay (1920's Walking Around In A Dream)
Q: So what was the impetus for writing the show in the first place?
Declan and Natalie describe a long evolving process sparked by translating Shakespeare into a playful 1920s slang, turning Midsummer Night's Dream into a jazz-age musical with public-domain tunes and original language.
Finge in 15 with Rielle Braid, Alysa Pires & Kevin Wong (A Moment For Frayed Nerves )
Q: What inspired you to write this show and how did the development begin?
The writers describe Fringe as a magical opportunity to write something quickly and stage it immediately, using the fringe slot to explore personal questions of motivation, power, and existence, while building a collaborative, non-linear creative process.
