Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Every Object Can Sound: How Playtronica is Reimagining Music Creation
Q: What has been your most impactful strategy for growing the Playtronica community and creator partnerships?
Early on we leveraged creator and influencer partnerships, demonstrating first-hand how to use the products in engaging ways. We believe the product for creators is the community itself, and we push to get people making reels and videos, sometimes even creating a band like 16 Pineapples to show the brand's potential.
Every Object Can Sound: How Playtronica is Reimagining Music Creation
Q: How do you approach product development and community when you're designing new instruments?
We treat users as co-creators by inviting beta testers, educators, and engineers into workshops. Prototyping happens on shelves with many prototypes, and we focus on the experience and the feeling of making music rather than polishing packaging or super-perfect finishes.
Every Object Can Sound: How Playtronica is Reimagining Music Creation
Q: For listeners who may not be familiar, what is Playtronica and what are some of the instruments you've created over the years?
Playtronica is a creative technology company and community that makes accessible music instruments by turning everyday objects into musical interfaces. We started with an adaptation of the Makey Makey concept, making instruments like Playtron, Touchme, Biotron, and Orbita, and now we're building Scales, which turns weight into sound.
You Don't Know Your Fans (And It's Costing You)
Q: What's the biggest problem that you think is facing the music industry today, Rob?
The core issue is artists not knowing who their fans are, which prevents them from owning the fan relationship and maximizing revenue through direct engagement.
Adam Neely on the Hidden Cost of AI Music
Q: Do you use any AI tools in your workflow currently?
Yes, mainly stem separation tools for education and production; I avoid fully generative AI for music creation due to concerns about data provenance and licensing.
