Moral Minority is a podcast on moral philosophy and the problem of moral foundations. Why does morality matter? What grounds the moral principles to which we appeal when making judgments about right and wrong, justice and injustice? Do we have good grounds for making the judgments we do make–in our everyday lives, our relationships, our work, or in politics? And if not, where does that leave us?

  • What a First Year!

I deeply appreciate the rigor, openness, and accessibility. Please never develop the irritating interruptive bug most podcasting personalities inevitably learn. If it happens, I’ll try enjoy the irony of the egotistical urge manifesting in a morally centered podcast.

Keep it up. You are helping.

  • Knowledgeable & thoughtful discussion of Nietzsche’s ‘Dawn’

I enjoyed this for several reasons.

First, the accuracy in summarizing Nietzsche’s Dawn, which is one of my favorites from him.

Second, this is also the rare podcast where the speakers are both concise & able to verbalize well. + it’s Ep 1 & unedited!

Third, the mystifying & somewhat infuriating Carlos Fuentes passage at the beginning is intended to force the listener to read that book in order to discover the relation.

Fourth, Where else can one get possibly ahistorical slander of Plato for not... more

The Moral Minority attempts to get at a question all too often dismissed in left political spaces as metaphysical quackery: moral thought and responsibility. With the rise of far right movements globally and the lack of a real leftist challenge to them, the need to question our assumptions pertaining to political and ethical commitments is more urgent than ever. With two hosts as well read as they are well spoken they are bound to make some headway.

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Contemporary Conversations: A.V. Marraccini on Susan Sontag’s Fascinating Fascism & Notes on Camp
Q: What does Sontag mean for you and how has her work impacted you?
Sontag influenced me significantly; she allowed me to embrace a more intimate and personal approach in my writing, something I lacked as a young aspiring intellectual.
Content of the Form: Grace Byron on Annie Ernaux’s The Years & Herculine
Q: How do you view the relationship between trauma and identity in your writing and in Ernaux's work?
Both trauma and identity can be consuming but also open pathways for understanding connection and community, as explored in Ernaux's narratives and my own writing.
Content of the Form: Grace Byron on Annie Ernaux’s The Years & Herculine
Q: What are the specific formal innovations you view in Ernaux's autobiographical work?
Ernaux employs a telescopic eye to turn personal details into a broader commentary on society, avoiding didacticism and instead allowing implications to arise from her experiences.
Content of the Form: Grace Byron on Annie Ernaux’s The Years & Herculine
Q: What influence do you feel Annie Ernaux has had on your own writing life?
Ernaux's ability to use personal moments to reflect on broader political implications inspires me to write from my experience without resorting to cliché or overexposure.
Moral of the Story: Sebastian Castillo on Fresh, Green Life
Q: What is your current relationship with philosophy?
I felt like after I had graduated from college, I sort of needed a break, and it was around this time that I became more interested in writing fiction.
