211. 25 Years Of Tuning, Best Bang For Buck Builds, Who Owns Your Tune? w/ Shawn Church
Q: What's your view on using ethanol and DI in tuning across different platforms?
Ethanol (E85) significantly boosts power and can be a cost-effective path when fuel delivery and sensor systems are properly managed; DI generally provides superior combustion control and power potential, but it also raises complexity and fuel-system costs. Tuning strategy should balance performance gains with reliability and cost across platforms.
211. 25 Years Of Tuning, Best Bang For Buck Builds, Who Owns Your Tune? w/ Shawn Church
Q: What were the major equipment changes and why did you switch from Dynapack to Mainline?
The decision came from the need for higher power handling and more scalable capabilities; Mainline offered greater power capacity and easier integration for growing use, especially as the market pushed toward 2000–3000+ horsepower in modern builds, despite some cost considerations.
211. 25 Years Of Tuning, Best Bang For Buck Builds, Who Owns Your Tune? w/ Shawn Church
Q: How did you get into the tuning business and what was your path to focusing on dynos?
I started tuning my own cars around 1999–2000, began tuning others in 2001, and launched the business in 2002. It began with Hondas and EFI era work, and over time I expanded to more platforms and built the business into a dyno-centric tuning shop with multiple specialists.
209. The EPA Ruling, The Right To Modify, What is SEMA Garage w/ Jim Moore
Q: How long does the SEMA certification process take compared to the CARB pathway?
The SEMA process is designed to be faster and more predictable, targeting about 90 days from start to finish, including test planning, vehicle sourcing, testing, and documentation.
209. The EPA Ruling, The Right To Modify, What is SEMA Garage w/ Jim Moore
Q: So right now, what you're saying is, if I'm making a product, I have to either go through, get a CARB EO, right?
Yes, you can either pursue CARB EO or use SEMA Certified Emissions; in many cases, SEMA certification can serve as a federal pathway that covers 49 states, with CARB still governing California. The SEMA process mirrors the EO in testing thresholds and can be submitted as part of the EO package.
