  • Not just for music lovers

As a father of two teenagers and a bandleader, this podcast is giving me a lot of insight. On my own life, on other ways to do it, but especially the unique cultural pressures that musician moms encounter. Pressures that I’ve been ignorant about.

There’s also a lot about the struggle of pursuing a career one chooses but balancing being a parent. And the guilt that comes if you work hard at your career and struggle with the balance. If your career is successful (somewhat) in music, you’ve proba... more

  • I love these conversations.

As a singer-songwriter who tours and is also a mom, these conversations are like medicine to me. They tell the hard and fascinating truth (or truths) about being a mom and being a musician. Very real and very honest. Thank you, Laura, for creating conversations about the experience of being a parent who is trying to be true to herself, her art and her family.

  • A New Favorite

I came to Midnight Lightning as a fan of Laura Veirs' music and it has quickly become the podcast I look forward to most each week. While I'm neither a musician nor a parent myself (yet!), I found every episode to be enlightening, entertaining, and full of wisdom. Laura is a wonderful podcast host with a great radio voice! I'm looking forward to season two of the podcast and in the meantime I'll be recommending Midnight Lightning to all the podcast fans I know!

  • Inspiring podcast

Midnight lightning is an enjoyable listen. It's inspiring hearing muscians talking about their process and how they cope with the life style. Relevant even if you don't have children or aren't a musician, but enjoy a good music documentary. Thanks Laura!

  • I'm Not Alone!!!

I love this podcast. As a musician-mom, it helps me to know others have done this before me, I am not alone, it is possible, and that there is no one way to make it work. I enjoy hearing from a diverse group of guests.

  • Carole Kaye's tour through U.S. history

Really enjoyed the extended time given to Carol Kaye in the Jan 1 episode. Her voice had me transfixed as she spun a story through U.S. history -- both musical eras and major events like the Great Depression and bombing of Pearl Harbor. It was fascinating to hear an 82-year-old talk candidly about raising kids as a parent dedicated to music and putting bread on the table, and with no help from her husbands.

  • Refreshing!

This podcast is wonderful. I recommend it for artists of all kinds who also parent. Every interview has a different perspective and offers a sense of kinship with other parents who create for a living (and perhaps sometimes giving permission to not make a living as an artist....)

Laura is a tender and thoughtful host, asking poignant questions and honoring the space between her and her guest. I also love that I am being introduced to some artists I have never heard of and others I have loved a ... more
