  • Biased, even to listener critical of Israel

I’m very critical of Israeli actions in Gaza. Unfortunately, Ms Mabrouk doesn’t contribute to our understanding or help us identify how we get to a Palestinian state. She was extremely biased, and MEI would better contribute to dialog by using a speaker who is able to describe a horrible situation but also suggest, in an unbiased way, pathways to stop Israeli bombing and achieve a Palestinian state. She lost a grand opportunity.

  • Some excellent, some disappointing...

This podcast has some very insightful and informative episodes. However, there are way too many episodes that have nothing to do with the Middle East. A recent episode on Democracy and the US elections was highly unbalanced. While I didn't disagree with some of the dangers highlighted by the interviewees, there was no alternative view. Guests' assertions were treated as facts.

  • Great pod with some great content but sadly not getting anything more than a 4 because of its tendency to be cluttered with handwringing Lefty idiocy.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

MP Fouad Makhzoumi on Lebanon's Future
Q: What role should the United States play moving forward, and what is your one major ask of Washington?
A security pact with the United States to deepen regional security coordination, which would help disarm Hizballah economically and militarily while enabling Lebanon to attract investment and implement reforms.
MP Fouad Makhzoumi on Lebanon's Future
Q: What concrete steps would you take to begin disarming Hizballah, and what risks do you foresee?
Begin with disarming Hizballah in Beirut and the Greater Beirut area, then expand to other regions; ensure coordination with the army and the Israelis to minimize risk, while building legitimacy for the Lebanese state through oversight and gradual implementation.
MP Fouad Makhzoumi on Lebanon's Future
Q: Fouad, can you explain Hizballah's role and how it is viewed today in Lebanese society?
Hizballah is seen as having a political foothold but as using thuggish methods to pressure and drag Lebanon into conflicts; there is growing domestic demand for reducing its influence and for peace with Israel, backed by polling across Sunni, Druze, and Christian communities.
Can the Latest US Plan Bridge Libya's Divide?
Q: Jonathan, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe there are also divisions within the Dabeba and Haftar families themselves. Isn't that right?
Yes, succession and internal divisions exist on both sides, with multiple family members potentially contending for authority, which complicates any long-term power-sharing agreement and raises questions about which leadership will ultimately shape policy.
Middle Eastern Rivalry in the Horn of Africa
Q: What motivates external actors to engage so deeply in the Horn, and what are the risks for local populations?
Actors are drawn by strategic access to trade routes, energy, security interests, and regional influence; however, engagement often reinforces autocratic regimes, narrows democratic space, and risks widening existing conflicts if not managed carefully.
