Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Hotel rooms inside bridges: Suzanne Oxenaar on SWEETS’ bold idea
Q: Can you talk me through, you're an unconventional hotelier, what's your inspiration behind turning real estate into hotels?
Suzanne explains that the Lloyd Hotel and later Sweets Hotel projects grew from a desire to welcome cultural guests and to share the cultural luggage of visitors, connecting guests to museums, theaters, and cultural institutes to create a community-aware hospitality model.
Being a landmark hotel with Robert-Jan Woltering of De L'Europe
Q: And how do you create a culture where, when you're not around, they deliver that kind of experience?
Autonomy and empowerment are key: motivate staff, give them freedom to act, and ensure every employee experiences the hotel by staying as a guest at least once a year to understand the guest perspective. Training, consistent coaching, and critiquing with a clear 'why' help staff internalize the standards without stifling personality.
A decade of growing a hotel group with Inge Decuypere of C-Hotels
Q: Can you share more about Ask Whisper and how AI-enabled guest communication is being used?
Ask Whisper automates initial guest inquiries via WhatsApp from reservation onward, handling common questions like parking and check-in timing, reducing manual work and speeding up responses; human staff step in when needed.
A decade of growing a hotel group with Inge Decuypere of C-Hotels
Q: What role has technology played in your scaling journey and how do you manage adopting new features across many hotels?
Technology is central for efficiency and insights. We pilot new features in a single hotel, gather feedback, then scale if successful. We rely on a dedicated staff member to monitor updates and translate them into practical workflows across the group.
A decade of growing a hotel group with Inge Decuypere of C-Hotels
Q: How does C-Hotels decide when to grow and how to integrate new properties into the portfolio?
We look for hotels that fit our mindset, brand identity, and the ability to maintain our level of quality and culture; growth is purposeful and slow when necessary, rather than chasing numbers. If a property aligns, we proceed; otherwise we stay at the current site.
