  • Informative and Entertaining

Really enjoying listening so far. It's informative, entertaining, and has given me insight into both being a better medical student and doctor. They have great guests who really get to the heart of what it means to truly practice medicine. I know I'll use a lot of the things I've learned as I continue as a medical student and as a resident and physician one day.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep174 | From the U.S. to the U.K.: One Anesthesiologist's Life in Two Healthcare Systems w/ Dr. Brock Andreatta
Q: What is the driving force behind moving to practice in the UK, and how long did the process take?
The guest wanted international experience and the move started when his partner pursued a PhD in Scotland; the process involved credentialing and paperwork that extended well beyond what he anticipated, taking about a year to complete for an attending-level credential, though a shorter fellowship path could have been pursued instead for quicker international experience.
Ep 173 | Specialty Spotlight: Combined Emergency Medicine/Anesthesiology w/ Dr. David Leon
Q: What tips would you give med students interested in pursuing a combined residency?
Expose yourself to both fields early to understand not just the clinical aspects but also attending life and career implications. Clarify your why for pursuing a combined path, anticipate an intense, nontraditional schedule, and prepare for some initial friction as you balance two knowledge bases, with the payoff being broader impact, collaboration across departments, and expanded career opportunities in academics and leadership.
Ep 173 | Specialty Spotlight: Combined Emergency Medicine/Anesthesiology w/ Dr. David Leon
Q: What does being dual trained enable you to do that others may not do as well?
Dual training gives you a broader toolkit: highly developed ultrasound and vascular access skills from EM complement the airway mastery, regional anesthesia, and medication dosing expertise from anesthesia, enabling you to perform advanced procedures in the ED and manage complex intraoperative scenarios with a seamless transition between the two environments.
Ep 173 | Specialty Spotlight: Combined Emergency Medicine/Anesthesiology w/ Dr. David Leon
Q: What aspects of each specialty did you find most appealing when considering the combined EM/Anesthesiology program?
I was drawn to trauma-focused work and the desire for a strong work-life balance, which surgical paths sometimes jeopardize. Emergency medicine offered broad acuity, rapid decision-making, and procedural variety, while anesthesia attracted mastery of pharmacology, airway management, and vascular access, with the ability to directly influence physiology minute-to-minute and see quick patient responses.
Ep172 | Careers in Healthcare: Pharmacist
Q: What would you like listeners, especially students, to know about the field of pharmacy?
Pharmacists play a vital, collaborative role across hospital teams, with a focus on drug interactions, dosing, and patient safety, rather than just retail roles; their expertise supports clinicians and improves patient outcomes.
