  • Help

I sell to a big agency who always asks for detailed proposals. That usually only include three slides per medium in the client recommendation. I have two questions: How can I make it easy for them to summarise my proposal? 2 can I hack the system somehow?

  • Demystifying media sales

Love this podcast. Fantastic way of learning by osmosis from top media sales experts. Recommend it to anyone already in the field but afraid to ask what they think might be stupid questions as well as those starting out and even people on the content side to gain a better understanding of what goes into making sure everyone gets paid

Dealing With The Tough Stuff
Q: What if a top performer's behavior is disruptive to internal teams but the sales results are outstanding—how do you manage without losing the performer?
Acknowledge the tension between results and behavior. Connect feedback to career progression and relationships, use structured feedback methods (like 360s), and ensure you have a clear plan for accountability and collaboration. If necessary, involve leadership to arbitrate and protect the broader team culture while sustaining performance.
Dealing With The Tough Stuff
Q: I have a high-performing but emotionally volatile rep who seeks progression yet is very sensitive to feedback. How can I develop them without burning out myself?
Align feedback with their progression goals by framing development as a pathway to the next level. Use a 360-degree feedback approach to surface broader perspectives, ask for permission to be direct, tailor communication channels to their preferences, and set clear non-negotiables and timelines to reduce defensiveness while supporting growth.
Dealing With The Tough Stuff
Q: Our head of events is protective of their staff and defensive to feedback, which protects the team but undermines accountability to clients. How should I approach this?
Use objective evidence and receipts to frame the issue without attacking individuals. Decide whether to escalate with documentation and involve higher-level leaders if needed, and schedule a calm, empathetic discussion outside peak stress moments. Focus on process, timelines, and client outcomes, and outline concrete steps to improve while maintaining a respectful culture.
Dealing With The Tough Stuff
Q: Hi Jamie, I'm managing a sales rep who is too focused on work-life balance and leaves early or blocks off time for personal needs during work hours. How do I address this without clashing with company culture?
First assess performance objectively to determine if boundaries or performance are the real issue. If the person is performing, have a careful, evidence-based conversation about impact on teammates and clients, and explore flexibility that still preserves business needs. If necessary, propose a plan to balance responsibilities with personal needs, emphasizing team impact and customer service.
Dealing With The Tough Stuff
Q: Jamie, here's a tough one. My new sales coordinator is a recent grad with a big personality, but they're sloppy with details and the knock-on effects, and the message land lands awkwardly.
Acknowledge this as a common issue in the industry and frame the conversation as a formal, supportive process: start with a clear check-in, set expectations, uncover the employee's career drivers, and build a development path that aligns their goals with mastering the current role. Use concrete consequences and examples to anchor the discussion, and consider a six-month focus on core responsibilities while outlining potential paths to advancement.
