Sure, the 1980s were a great decade for film. But have you seen all of them? No, neither has Mary. In fact, some pretty big films passed her by, what with being in kindergarten at the time: A Nightmare on Elm Street, Moonstruck, My Neighbor Totoro... So it's time to fix that. A silent film of an opera sounds like a joke, but no, it's quite real--and honestly pretty disjointed and dull, playing more like highlights of Wagner's opera about the Holy Grail than a film in its own right. We also discuss Catholic theology, trans... more

Love to virtually hang with Mary and Dennis! Sweet, relatable couple giving funny and very thoughtful readings of a formative time in films.
I just stumbled upon this episode as I was looking for podcast discussing Over the Edge, and I found yours one of the best and spot on analysis of the film that I had listened to or read. I’m glad you enjoyed it. That film laughed an indelible mark on my psyche at a young age and it’s still stands up to the test of time. You really were able to pick up on the themes of suburban development, capitalism, and 70’s neglect of the the youth. Looking forward to listening to your other episodes.
Keep up the good work. 💙
Mary & Dennis strike an impressive and always entertaining balance of fun joking around and truly engaging film insight with Mary’s knowledge of old classic Hollywood and Dennis’ childhood of cable movie staples of the 70s & 80s informing each episode, and plenty of overall Gen-X snark and humor throughout.
