Linguistics After Dark is a podcast where three linguists (and sometimes other people) answer your burning questions about language, linguistics, and whatever else you need advice about. We have three rules: any question is fair game, there's no research allowed, and if we can't answer, we have to drink. It's a little like CarTalk for language: call us if your language is making a funny noise, and... more

  • Insufferable

Did you know that Jenny was too brilliant to study spelling as a kid? If not, you sure will by the end of the first episode! You’ll also get to hear lots of whining about how difficult it is to resist the impulse to research each and every listener question, because, you know, intelligence is just such a curse! I’d suggest you pass on this pseudo-intellectual b.s. in favor of a podcast by established linguists who don’t need to constantly stroke their own fragile egos. 🤮

  • Sorry you’re gone

I just discovered this podcast in my search for linguistics knowledge. Too bad it’s clearly defunct but I’m enjoying the few episodes there are.

  • Sarah is just so annoying trying to appear as "the expert", her dismissive comments are just bad taste. I have myself a PhD in Linguistics and let me tell you that is not a good example of a linguist.

  • Yeah, but YOU’RE wrong

I really don’t know if these people went to college and, if they did, whether the gates were open. I was allowing this podcast to grow on me (like some fungus, I guess), but the only straw that broke the camel’s back is when 2 of the 3 illiterates said - categorically - that those who pronounce “herb” with the “h” “are wrong”.

You’re linguists, or claim to be. Firstly, you don’t even realise that you took a word from English and mangled its pronunciation. Then, to compound it, you go on to stat... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 19: Voiced Glottal Stop 2k25
Q: Does there exist a less confusing pronoun in languages to replace 'they'?
While many languages have different pronoun structures, English's 'they' serves multiple purposes, and there might be equivalents in other languages that maintain distinctions.
Episode 19: Voiced Glottal Stop 2k25
Q: If you had to remove one sound from the human phonemic inventory, which one would it be and why?
The hosts discuss various sounds they would remove, mentioning schwa for chaos or pharyngeal fricatives.
Episode 19: Voiced Glottal Stop 2k25
Q: Why do we say, and you will be so and so, when confirming identity? Why is it future tense?
The use of 'will' feels subjunctive in English, and it's a way to be indirect and polite when confirming someone's identity.
Episode 18: Can't Say "Teeth" Without Teeth
Q: Would someone wanting to be a linguist need a degree, or is a degree just a certification?
There's tons of ways to learn things. I love, I love that Angela is saying that like, they're fascinated by linguistics. Obviously they're listening to our podcasts. I think it's about context.
Episode 18: Can't Say "Teeth" Without Teeth
Q: Is this correlation real or am I imagining things?
I think there's some correlation here, but I think also there's a little bit of a sample size problem going on with the things that Elijah is proposing here.
